Spatola, of Brooklyn and the US Seventh Army, drops a 4.2 mortar shell into the barrel of the weapon to start it on its way to Forbach during the Seventh Army's drive for the Saar. Forbach is in Lorraine, which had been one of France's lost provinces. March 5, 1945
